Leading From Where You Are
Speaker: Ronald A. Williams
Leading From Where You Are is a very practical guide to understanding the culture of collaboration and the personal responsibilities of each person involved. Here is a clear path to true leadership that builds the capacity of a team or organization to be resilient, sustainable, responsive, and effective. The steps toward this kind of leadership are clearly laid out: defining oneself, developing deep levels of self-awareness, being able to manage boundaries because of that self-awareness, remaining intentional rather than reactive, and the ability to help develop mature companions in the process. The useful and powerful practice of action-learning reveals an effective way of dealing with the complex issues (i.e., conflict, assumptions, gossip, sabotage) that can hinder the process of collaboration. Understanding the nature of these issues and adapting practices such as action-learning can bring maturity and allow any of us to step in with a different perspective and thus influence a more healthy and mature culture.

You will be able to see the application in its most configured state thus far and be able to understand what the change will be for you.

Breakout Session 01: Progressing on DEI Initiatives: Why Infrastructure Matters
Speaker: Dr. Kelly Campbell & Robin Phillips
CSU San Bernardino has a unique DEI infrastructure which serves to accelerate its progress on initiatives. Two co-chief diversity officers representing Academic Affairs and Human Resources oversee a 70-member President’s DEI Board. The Board members include students, staff, faculty, and administrators spread across 6 sub-committees focused on DEI in: Student Recruitment, Retention and Graduation; Faculty Recruitment, Retention and Development; Staff Recruitment, Retention and Development; Alumni and Community Outreach; Curriculum and Student Learning; and Programming. Each committee is led by a Chair and Vice Chair and contains a member of the President’s Cabinet. The committees meet every two weeks throughout the academic year to implement the institution’s DEI strategic initiatives. This session will describe the benefits and challenges associated with this infrastructure and encourage audience participation so that participants can learn from each other.

Breakout Session 05: Living Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Higher Education

Come join this interactive workshop to learn more about what equity, diversity and inclusion mean to you, your students, and colleagues. You will learn about topics such as intersectionality and positionality and share your experiences using a combination of self-reflection and serial testimony. The goal is for you to leave the workshop with at least one “enactable possibility” to bring back to your campus. This session is based on the work of the National SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Project.

A panel discussion led by CSU employees about what a staff council/assembly is and how we can advocate for staff support on our campuses. We’ll talk about HEERA limitations and lessons learned based on actual campus examples, along with continuing the conversation about the idea of creating a staff council at the CSU level, like the Academic Senate of California State University (ASCSU). FERPA can be a complicated and often misused set of federal regulations that governs the role of higher education and how we keep, use, and share our student’s records/information (Hint: it is not just about privacy). Join us for this session to learn about the federal act and discover not just what you can say and when you can say, but more about the background, intention, and need for the law.
Breakout Session 03: Allies Panel: Student Kaleidoscope

Our goal for this panel session is to reflect on the many ways we support students, much like a kaleidoscope, in the various units and offices across campuses. We will rotate through panelist questions about history, systems, partnerships, and advice with campus colleagues from Sonoma, San Marcos, Channel Islands, and Chico as they share information about the centers, programs, and operations they support as student allies. Once we have rotated through the panelist questions, we will wrap up with an open Q&A with the audience. Join us for open dialogue and creative idea-sharing at this session.
Breakout Session 04: Empowering Kindness: Breaking Cycles of Unhealthy Reactions (SEL)

Elevate teaches social and emotional (SEL) practices that strengthen the skill of looking for the positive in one’s self and in all those around them. The practices will educate staff and students how to recognize, self-regulate, and shift their emotional reactions into chosen responses that best serve them, and all those around them.
Breakout Session 06: What do I do?! Supporting Students in Distress

This session will address ways in which you can support students in distress all while making sure to take care of yourself. Regardless of your role, students may end up expressing distress and their current needs to you. This session will bolster your skills for supporting them, maintaining boundaries, and referring them to appropriate mental health support.
