1000-1050 am - Session 06
Community Resilience at Cal Poly Humboldt: Process, Strategies, and Impacts
Speakers: Rosamel Benavides-Garb, Michael Fisher, Michelle Caisse, Michele Miyamoto

The Cal Poly Humboldt team will discuss their process for engaging the broader campus community in conversations about how the University would respond to a potential immigration enforcement presence on campus.
Beyond the scenario of immigration enforcement, this process and operational integration are intended to create an engaged community that helps align campus response efforts with community concerns, no matter the challenge.
This session will partially be a presentation of our experience and, more importantly, a discussion with attendees aimed at learning from one another.

1100 am-1200 pm - Closing Keynote
Cultivating Community: How Radical Empathy and Compassion Can Bring Us Together in Higher Education
Speaker: Sarah Fried-Gintis

Our closing keynote invites us to look honestly at what it takes to build real community. Tension, assumptions, and fractured communication show up in meetings, classrooms, and professional relationships. Most of us feel it, even when we do not name it. Dr. Sarah Fried Gintis, a historian by training and the Senior Systemwide Director of Academic Talent Development at the Office of the Chancellor, emphasizes two values that function as both skills and commitments: radical empathy and compassion. She argues that when we practice them intentionally, they reshape how we listen, respond, and lead. By leaning into these values, we can build respect across roles and differences, strengthen communication, and create a shared sense of purpose. The aim is to foster deeper connections that make productive conversation and problem solving possible, even when we disagree.
